The interpreter works in real time. At large events, sound-proof interpreting booths are used. At smaller and shorter events, the interpreter can whisper the interpretation to the target audience instead (no more than two delegates).
The quality of the interpretation comes down to the interpreter’s ability to hear the speaker properly, which is why most interpreters prefer working in the booth. Interpreters work in pairs of two, taking turns about every 30 minutes. At big multilingual events, simultaneous interpreting is nowadays the standard mode.
In consecutive mode, the interpreter notes speeches or speech segments of up to 7 minutes using memory and a special note-taking technique, delivering the interpretation after the speaker has finished. This mode is well suited for unscripted speeches, technical expositions, lectures etc.
NB: a speech interpreted consecutively takes twice as long. A shorter form of consecutive can be used in dialogue oriented situations such as bilateral negotiations, business meetings etc.
